Psalm 23 is one of the most loved passages in the whole Bible. People read it at funerals, in hospital rooms, and in quiet moments at home. It is short, but it says a lot about who God is and how He cares for us.
Here is how it begins:
"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want."
Let us walk through it piece by piece.
"The Lord is my shepherd"
A shepherd knows his sheep by name. He feeds them, protects them, and goes looking for them when they wander. David is saying that is how God cares for us. We are not on our own. We have a Shepherd who knows us and stays with us.
"He makes me to lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside the still waters."
Green pastures and still waters are pictures of rest. Sheep will not lie down if they are afraid or hungry. They rest when they trust the shepherd.
God gives that kind of rest. He provides what we need, and He leads us to places where we can breathe again. Rest is not laziness here. It is trust.
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me."
David does not say we will never walk through a valley. He says we will walk through it, not stay in it, and not walk it alone.
The comfort is not that the valley disappears. The comfort is who walks with us in it. "You are with me" is the whole point. Fear loses its grip when we know the Shepherd is beside us.
"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life."
Goodness and mercy do not just visit us once. David says they follow us, all our days. That means God's kindness is not only for good days. It follows us into hard days too, and it stays with us to the end.
What does this mean for your everyday life?
It means three things you can hold onto today.
First, you are known. Your Shepherd knows you by name, and He has not lost track of you.
Second, you are provided for. You may not have everything you want, but in Him you shall not want for what you truly need.
Third, you are not alone. In the valley and on the good days, He is with you.
That is why we made the Psalm 23 design. It carries a psalm people already love, in a form someone can ask about. When someone asks what it means, you get to tell them about a Shepherd who knows, provides for, and stays with His sheep.
