What Does Ephesians 1:7 Mean?

If you have ever wondered what one verse can change, Ephesians 1:7 is a good place to start. It is short, but it holds the whole story of what Jesus did for us.

Here is the verse:

"In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace."

Let us walk through it piece by piece.

"In Him we have redemption"

Redemption means to be bought back. In the ancient world, if someone was in debt or enslaved, a redeemer could pay the price to set them free. The payment was real, and the person walked out free.

The Bible uses that same picture for us. We were held by sin, and we could not free ourselves. But in Christ, we have redemption. It is not something we earn. It is something we receive because we belong to Him.

That is also why we wrote about this word before. If you want the fuller story, read What Does "Redeemed" Mean?

"Through His blood"

This is the price that was paid. Jesus gave His life on the cross so we could go free. His blood is not a small detail in the verse. It is the proof that our freedom cost something, and that Jesus was willing to pay it in full.

When we say we are redeemed, we are saying someone paid for us, and that someone is Jesus.

"The forgiveness of sins"

This is what we were bought back from. Sin is not just mistakes we wish we could take back. It is the guilt, the shame, and the separation from God that came with it.

Forgiveness in this verse is complete. God does not just overlook our sin. He paid for it, and He forgives it. That means your past does not get the last word. Forgiveness does.

"According to the riches of His grace"

Grace is a gift we do not deserve and cannot repay. And Paul says God gave it according to His riches, not according to our record.

God did not forgive us reluctantly, or only a little. He forgave generously, because grace is who He is. There is no shortage in Him, and no limit on what He was willing to give to bring us home.

What does this mean for your everyday life?

It means three things you can hold onto today.

First, you are forgiven. Not partly forgiven, or forgiven until your next mistake. Fully forgiven, because Jesus paid in full.

Second, you are free. You do not have to live under guilt or shame anymore. You are not defined by your worst day.

Third, you are His. Redemption is not temporary. If Jesus paid for you, you belong to Him, now and forever.
