"Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.'" John 11:25
Jesus spoke these words to Martha. Her brother Lazarus had just died, and she was grieving. She knew Jesus could have healed him. She believed God would raise the dead on the last day. What she did not expect was what Jesus said next. He did not point her to a future event. He pointed her to Himself.
"I am the resurrection and the life."
First, notice the words "I am." Jesus was not just claiming to know about resurrection. He was claiming to BE it. Resurrection is not only something that happens one day. It is a Person, and His name is Jesus.
Second, He is "the life." Real life is not just breathing and getting through the day. Real life is knowing God, and Jesus is where that life is found. That life starts now for everyone who believes, and it goes on forever.
"Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live."
Jesus does not pretend death is not real. He says "though he die." Christians still grieve. Christians still bury people they love. But for the person who believes in Jesus, death is not the end of the story. It is a doorway. Because Jesus rose from the dead, everyone who trusts in Him will rise too.
That is why this verse changes how we face death. We do not have to face it with no hope. We can grieve with hope, because the One who beat death is alive, and He promises life to everyone who believes in Him.
That is also why we made the "What If Death Isn't The End?" design. It carries a question people can ask about, and when someone asks what it means, you get to tell them about Jesus, the resurrection and the life.
